Yamashin-Filter's (TSE:6240) Dividend Will Be Increased To ¥5.00
The board of Yamashin-Filter Corp. (TSE:6240) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥5.00 on the 2nd of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 2.4%.

Yamashin-Filter's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Yamashin-Filter's earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 22.0% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 67%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Yamashin-Filter's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Looking back, Yamashin-Filter's dividend hasn't been particularly consistent. This suggests that the dividend might not be the most reliable. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥2.00 total annually to ¥10.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 20% a year over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Yamashin-Filter's earnings per share has shrunk at 11% a year over the past five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn't be feeling too comfortable.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Yamashin-Filter is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
