Takuma (TSE:6013) Has Announced A Dividend Of ¥39.00

The board of Takuma Co., Ltd. (TSE:6013) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 8th of December, with investors receiving ¥39.00 per share. This takes the dividend yield to 3.8%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Takuma's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Before making this announcement, Takuma was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. Since a dividend means the company is paying out cash to investors, this could prove to be a problem in the future.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 9.8% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 60% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Takuma Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥8.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥79.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 26% per annum over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.

The Dividend Has Growth Potential

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Takuma has impressed us by growing EPS at 9.0% per year over the past five years. The lack of cash flows does make us a bit cautious though, especially when it comes to the future of the dividend.

Our Thoughts On Takuma's Dividend

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Takuma will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Takuma is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
