Kawada Technologies, Inc. (TSE:3443) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 27%
Kawada Technologies, Inc. (TSE:3443) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 4.9% isn't as attractive.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 13x, you may still consider Kawada Technologies as a highly attractive investment with its 4.6x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Recent times have been advantageous for Kawada Technologies as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Kawada Technologies' Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Kawada Technologies' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 69%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 49% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 28% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 9.7%.
With this information, we are not surprised that Kawada Technologies is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
The Bottom Line On Kawada Technologies' P/E
Kawada Technologies' recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Kawada Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
