Matsui Construction's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk

We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. The last dividend made up quite a large portion of free cash flows, and this was made worse by the lack of free cash flows. Generally, we think that this would be a risky long term practice.

Looking forward, EPS could fall by 15.1% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 115%, which could put the dividend in jeopardy if the company's earnings don't improve.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥8.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥30.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 14% a year over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Over the past five years, it looks as though Matsui Construction's EPS has declined at around 15% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.

Matsui Construction's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Matsui Construction's payments are rock solid. The track record isn't great, and the payments are a bit high to be considered sustainable. We don't think Matsui Construction is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
