Investing in Resona Holdings (TSE:8308) five years ago would have delivered you a 320% gain
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. One great example is Resona Holdings, Inc. (TSE:8308) which saw its share price drive 253% higher over five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 27% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 14% in 90 days).
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, Resona Holdings managed to grow its earnings per share at 7.0% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 29% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Resona Holdings the TSR over the last 5 years was 320%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Resona Holdings has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 25% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 33% a year, is even better. Before forming an opinion on Resona Holdings you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
