Legendary fund manager Li Lu (who Charlie Munger backed) once said, 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. Importantly, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (TSE:7272) does carry debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.
What Is Yamaha Motor's Net Debt?
As you can see below, Yamaha Motor had JP¥1.02t of debt, at March 2025, which is about the same as the year before. You can click the chart for greater detail. However, because it has a cash reserve of JP¥360.8b, its net debt is less, at about JP¥655.3b.
How Healthy Is Yamaha Motor's Balance Sheet?
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Yamaha Motor had liabilities of JP¥1.22t falling due within a year, and liabilities of JP¥405.1b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of JP¥360.8b and JP¥619.6b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by JP¥647.1b.
This deficit isn't so bad because Yamaha Motor is worth JP¥1.10t, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
Yamaha Motor's net debt is 2.8 times its EBITDA, which is a significant but still reasonable amount of leverage. But its EBIT was about 1k times its interest expense, implying the company isn't really paying a high cost to maintain that level of debt. Even were the low cost to prove unsustainable, that is a good sign. Shareholders should be aware that Yamaha Motor's EBIT was down 41% last year. Our View
On the face of it, Yamaha Motor's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow left us tentative about the stock, and its EBIT growth rate was no more enticing than the one empty restaurant on the busiest night of the year. But on the bright side, its interest cover is a good sign, and makes us more optimistic. Looking at the bigger picture, it seems clear to us that Yamaha Motor's use of debt is creating risks for the company. If everything goes well that may pay off but the downside of this debt is a greater risk of permanent losses. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start.
