Musashi Seimitsu Industry's (TSE:7220) Dividend Will Be Increased To ¥25.00
Musashi Seimitsu Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE:7220) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 26th of June to ¥25.00. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 2.1%.

Musashi Seimitsu Industry's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. However, Musashi Seimitsu Industry's earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 86.4%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 17% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥22.00 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥35.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 4.8% over that duration. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Musashi Seimitsu Industry has seen earnings per share falling at 6.7% per year over the last five years. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
Our Thoughts On Musashi Seimitsu Industry's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Musashi Seimitsu Industry is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance.
