Benign Growth For F-Tech Inc. (TSE:7212) Underpins Stock's 26% Plummet
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the F-Tech Inc. (TSE:7212) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 42% in that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, F-Tech may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.3x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
For instance, F-Tech's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, F-Tech would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 2.9% decrease to the company's bottom line. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in EPS being achieved in total. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 9.8% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's understandable that F-Tech's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On F-Tech's P/E
Having almost fallen off a cliff, F-Tech's share price has pulled its P/E way down as well. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of F-Tech revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with F-Tech (at least 1 which is a bit concerning), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
