Italgas (BIT:IG) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To €0.406

Italgas S.p.A.'s (BIT:IG) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to €0.406 on 21st of May. This will take the annual payment to 6.6% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Italgas' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Before making this announcement, Italgas was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 23.7%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 54% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Italgas Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 8 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. Since 2017, the annual payment back then was €0.20, compared to the most recent full-year payment of €0.406. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9.3% a year over that time. Investors will likely want to see a longer track record of growth before making decision to add this to their income portfolio.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 2.6% per year. Growth of 2.6% may indicate that the company has limited investment opportunity so it is returning its earnings to shareholders instead. While this isn't necessarily a negative, it definitely signals that dividend growth could be constrained in the future unless earnings start to pick up again.

Our Thoughts On Italgas' Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Italgas is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. For example, we've identified 2 warning signs for Italgas (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
