Intred S.p.A.'s (BIT:ITD) Shares Climb 26% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up

Published
BIT:ITD

Intred S.p.A. (BIT:ITD) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. Looking further back, the 22% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

Following the firm bounce in price, Intred's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 26x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Italy, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Intred could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Intred's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Intred's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 6.9%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year EPS growth is still a noteworthy 11% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 10% per annum over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 12% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.

In light of this, it's curious that Intred's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Intred's P/E

The strong share price surge has got Intred's P/E rushing to great heights as well. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Intred currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
