Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane (BIT:INW) Has A Pretty Healthy Balance Sheet
Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane S.p.A. (BIT:INW) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane's Debt?
As you can see below, at the end of March 2024, Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane had €3.26b of debt, up from €3.13b a year ago. Click the image for more detail. Net debt is about the same, since the it doesn't have much cash.
A Look At Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane's Liabilities
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane had liabilities of €630.7m due within 12 months and liabilities of €4.32b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had €44.8m in cash and €206.2m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling €4.70b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
While this might seem like a lot, it is not so bad since Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane has a huge market capitalization of €9.65b, and so it could probably strengthen its balance sheet by raising capital if it needed to. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution.
We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane has net debt to EBITDA of 4.5 suggesting it uses a fair bit of leverage to boost returns. On the plus side, its EBIT was 7.8 times its interest expense, and its net debt to EBITDA, was quite high, at 4.5. If Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane can keep growing EBIT at last year's rate of 18% over the last year, then it will find its debt load easier to manage. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. So the logical step is to look at the proportion of that EBIT that is matched by actual free cash flow. During the last three years, Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane produced sturdy free cash flow equating to 71% of its EBIT, about what we'd expect. This free cash flow puts the company in a good position to pay down debt, when appropriate.
Our View
Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow was a real positive on this analysis, as was its EBIT growth rate. In contrast, our confidence was undermined by its apparent struggle handle its debt, based on its EBITDA,. When we consider all the elements mentioned above, it seems to us that Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane is managing its debt quite well. Having said that, the load is sufficiently heavy that we would recommend any shareholders keep a close eye on it. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane you should know about.
