Improved Revenues Required Before Siav S.p.A. (BIT:SIAV) Stock's 30% Jump Looks Justified
Despite an already strong run, Siav S.p.A. (BIT:SIAV) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 30% in the last thirty days. Looking further back, the 25% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Even after such a large jump in price, Siav may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in Italy have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Siav Performed Recently?
Recent times haven't been great for Siav as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Siav's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Still, the latest three year period was better as it's delivered a decent 12% overall rise in revenue. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 5.2% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 45% growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's understandable that Siav's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
What Does Siav's P/S Mean For Investors?
Despite Siav's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As expected, our analysis of Siav's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
