The market for Redelfi S.p.A.'s (BIT:RDF) stock was strong after it released a healthy earnings report last week. While the profit numbers were good, our analysis has found some concerning factors that shareholders should be aware of.
A Closer Look At Redelfi's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Redelfi has an accrual ratio of 0.27 for the year to December 2025. Therefore, we know that it's free cashflow was significantly lower than its statutory profit, which is hardly a good thing. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of €11m, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of €5.22m. We also note that Redelfi's free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of €11m. Notably, the company has issued new shares, thus diluting existing shareholders and reducing their share of future earnings.

One essential aspect of assessing earnings quality is to look at how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, Redelfi issued 19% more new shares over the last year. That means its earnings are split among a greater number of shares. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. You can see a chart of Redelfi's EPS by clicking here.
How Is Dilution Impacting Redelfi's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?
Redelfi has improved its profit over the last three years, with an annualized gain of 1,887% in that time. In comparison, earnings per share only gained over the same period. And the 80% profit boost in the last year certainly seems impressive at first glance. But that's starkly different from the drop in earnings per share. So you can see that the dilution has had a bit of an impact on shareholders.
If Redelfi's EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.
Our Take On Redelfi's Profit Performance
As it turns out, Redelfi couldn't match its profit with cashflow and its dilution means that shareholders own less of the company than the did before (unless they bought more shares). For the reasons mentioned above, we think that a perfunctory glance at Redelfi's statutory profits might make it look better than it really is on an underlying level.
