Investors Holding Back On Saipem SpA (BIT:SPM)

Saipem SpA's (BIT:SPM) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Energy Services industry in Italy, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.8x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Saipem's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Saipem has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Saipem's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 24%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 46% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 3.9% per year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 3.9% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Saipem's P/S is lagging behind its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Saipem's P/S

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've seen that Saipem currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecast growth is in line with the wider industry. Despite average revenue growth estimates, there could be some unobserved threats keeping the P/S low. Perhaps investors are concerned that the company could underperform against the forecasts over the near term.
