We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Autogrill S.p.A. (BIT:AGL).

What Is Insider Buying?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

Autogrill Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Group CEO Gianmario Tondato da Ruos bought €53k worth of shares at a price of €3.60 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (€6.68), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Our data indicates that Autogrill insiders own about €5.0m worth of shares (which is 0.3% of the company). However, it's possible that insiders might have an indirect interest through a more complex structure. We do generally prefer see higher levels of insider ownership.
