Loss-making Talea Group (BIT:TALEA) sheds a further €5.3m, taking total shareholder losses to 79% over 3 years
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Talea Group S.p.A. (BIT:TALEA) share price up 16% in a single quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been stomach churning. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 79% in the last three years. So it's about time shareholders saw some gains. Of course the real question is whether the business can sustain a turnaround.
With the stock having lost 10% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

Given that Talea Group didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.
In the last three years, Talea Group saw its revenue grow by 27% per year, compound. That is faster than most pre-profit companies. So why has the share priced crashed 21% per year, in the same time? The share price makes us wonder if there is an issue with profitability. Sometimes fast revenue growth doesn't lead to profits. Unless the balance sheet is strong, the company might have to raise capital.

A Different Perspective
Investors in Talea Group had a tough year, with a total loss of 30%, against a market gain of about 12%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 3% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Talea Group better, we need to consider many other factors.
