Innovatec S.p.A. (BIT:INC) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 49% after a shaky period beforehand. But the last month did very little to improve the 74% share price decline over the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, considering around half the companies operating in Italy's Electrical industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.9x, you may still consider Innovatec as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Innovatec Has Been Performing
For example, consider that Innovatec's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Innovatec's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1.6%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 59% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 8.3% shows it's noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it odd that Innovatec is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Despite Innovatec's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We're very surprised to see Innovatec currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
