Do Indowind Energy's (NSE:INDOWIND) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Indowind Energy (NSE:INDOWIND). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Indowind Energy's Improving Profits

In a capitalist society capital chases profits, and that means share prices tend rise with earnings per share (EPS). So like the hint of a smile on a face that I love, growing EPS generally makes me look twice. It is therefore awe-striking that Indowind Energy's EPS went from ₹0.0063 to ₹0.02 in just one year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Indowind Energy's EBIT margins have actually improved by 6.0 percentage points in the last year, to reach 1.3%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 9.9%. That falls short of ideal.

Since Indowind Energy is no giant, with a market capitalization of ₹652m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Indowind Energy Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I always like to check up on CEO compensation, because I think that reasonable pay levels, around or below the median, can be a sign that shareholder interests are well considered. For companies with market capitalizations under ₹15b, like Indowind Energy, the median CEO pay is around ₹2.9m.

The Indowind Energy CEO received total compensation of only ₹1.5m in the year to . You could consider this pay as somewhat symbolic, which suggests the CEO does not need a lot of compensation to stay motivated. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Does Indowind Energy Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Indowind Energy's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. With rocketing profits, its seems likely the business has a rosy future; and it may have hit an inflection point. At the same time the reasonable CEO compensation reflects well on the board of directors. While I couldn't be sure without a deeper dive, it does seem that Indowind Energy has the hallmarks of a quality business; and that would make it well worth watching. Even so, be aware that Indowind Energy is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...

Although Indowind Energy certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
