These 4 Measures Indicate That Snowman Logistics (NSE:SNOWMAN) Is Using Debt Reasonably Well

So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. As with many other companies Snowman Logistics Limited (NSE:SNOWMAN) makes use of debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of September 2021 Snowman Logistics had ₹2.48b of debt, an increase on ₹1.90b, over one year. However, it also had ₹367.8m in cash, and so its net debt is ₹2.11b.
How Strong Is Snowman Logistics' Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Snowman Logistics had liabilities of ₹501.0m due within a year, and liabilities of ₹2.31b falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had ₹367.8m in cash and ₹577.0m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling ₹1.86b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
This deficit isn't so bad because Snowman Logistics is worth ₹5.25b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt.
In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
While we wouldn't worry about Snowman Logistics's net debt to EBITDA ratio of 3.8, we think its super-low interest cover of 1.2 times is a sign of high leverage. In large part that's due to the company's significant depreciation and amortisation charges, which arguably mean its EBITDA is a very generous measure of earnings, and its debt may be more of a burden than it first appears. So shareholders should probably be aware that interest expenses appear to have really impacted the business lately. The good news is that Snowman Logistics grew its EBIT a smooth 39% over the last twelve months. Like the milk of human kindness that sort of growth increases resilience, making the company more capable of managing debt. Our View
Snowman Logistics's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow suggests it can handle its debt as easily as Cristiano Ronaldo could score a goal against an under 14's goalkeeper. But we must concede we find its interest cover has the opposite effect. Looking at all the aforementioned factors together, it strikes us that Snowman Logistics can handle its debt fairly comfortably. On the plus side, this leverage can boost shareholder returns, but the potential downside is more risk of loss, so it's worth monitoring the balance sheet.
