Black Box (NSE:BBOX) Might Be Having Difficulty Using Its Capital Effectively

If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So while Black Box (NSE:BBOX) has a high ROCE right now, lets see what we can decipher from how returns are changing.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Black Box:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.20 = ₹4.2b ÷ (₹35b - ₹14b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).

So, Black Box has an ROCE of 20%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 17% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Can We Tell From Black Box's ROCE Trend?

When we looked at the ROCE trend at Black Box, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, while the ROCE is still high, it's fallen from 50% where it was five years ago. Meanwhile, the business is utilizing more capital but this hasn't moved the needle much in terms of sales in the past 12 months, so this could reflect longer term investments. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.

On a side note, Black Box has done well to pay down its current liabilities to 41% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money. Keep in mind 41% is still pretty high, so those risks are still somewhat prevalent.

The Bottom Line

To conclude, we've found that Black Box is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Yet to long term shareholders the stock has gifted them an incredible 253% return in the last five years, so the market appears to be rosy about its future. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
