Even With A 29% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Alpex Solar Limited's (NSE:ALPEXSOLAR) Performance Completely

Despite an already strong run, Alpex Solar Limited (NSE:ALPEXSOLAR) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 29% in the last thirty days. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Alpex Solar may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 5.6x, since almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in India have P/S ratios greater than 10.2x and even P/S higher than 26x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Alpex Solar Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Alpex Solar has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

Alpex Solar's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 112% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 178% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 30% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Alpex Solar's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Alpex Solar's P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Alpex Solar's P/S close to the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our examination of Alpex Solar revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Alpex Solar (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you need to be mindful of.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
