V2 Retail Limited (NSE:V2RETAIL) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. The annual gain comes to 218% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

Although its price has surged higher, V2 Retail's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Specialty Retail industry in India, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.6x and even P/S above 6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does V2 Retail's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Revenue has risen firmly for V2 Retail recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, V2 Retail would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 16% gain to the company's top line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 97% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 30% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we can see why V2 Retail is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does V2 Retail's P/S Mean For Investors?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift V2 Retail's P/S close to the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of V2 Retail revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
