Baazar Style Retail (NSE:STYLEBAAZA) Is Posting Healthy Earnings, But It Is Not All Good News
Strong earnings weren't enough to please Baazar Style Retail Limited's (NSE:STYLEBAAZA) shareholders over the last week. We did some digging and found some underlying numbers that are worrying.
Zooming In On Baazar Style Retail's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Baazar Style Retail has an accrual ratio of 0.25 for the year to September 2025. We can therefore deduce that its free cash flow fell well short of covering its statutory profit. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of ₹542m, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of ₹775.7m. We saw that FCF was ₹408m a year ago though, so Baazar Style Retail has at least been able to generate positive FCF in the past. However, that's not all there is to consider. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio. One positive for Baazar Style Retail shareholders is that it's accrual ratio was significantly better last year, providing reason to believe that it may return to stronger cash conversion in the future. Shareholders should look for improved cashflow relative to profit in the current year, if that is indeed the case.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
Given the accrual ratio, it's not overly surprising that Baazar Style Retail's profit was boosted by unusual items worth ₹570m in the last twelve months. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. We can see that Baazar Style Retail's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to September 2025. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On Baazar Style Retail's Profit Performance
Summing up, Baazar Style Retail received a nice boost to profit from unusual items, but could not match its paper profit with free cash flow. Considering all this we'd argue Baazar Style Retail's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
