A Closer Look At Anant Raj's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.

For the year to March 2022, Anant Raj had an accrual ratio of -0.10. Therefore, its statutory earnings were quite a lot less than its free cashflow. In fact, it had free cash flow of ₹4.6b in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of ₹565.2m. Notably, Anant Raj had negative free cash flow last year, so the ₹4.6b it produced this year was a welcome improvement.
