Improved Earnings Required Before Peninsula Land Limited (NSE:PENINLAND) Stock's 28% Jump Looks Justified

Peninsula Land Limited (NSE:PENINLAND) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 28% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 223% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 33x, you may still consider Peninsula Land as an attractive investment with its 18.1x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Earnings have risen firmly for Peninsula Land recently, which is pleasing to see. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this respectable earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Peninsula Land's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 24% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 25% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

With this information, we can see why Peninsula Land is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.

The Final Word

Despite Peninsula Land's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Peninsula Land maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
