If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Alpa Laboratories (NSE:ALPA) Before It's Too Late

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Alpa Laboratories (NSE:ALPA), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Alpa Laboratories Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Alpa Laboratories has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, Alpa Laboratories's EPS shot from ₹3.30 to ₹7.39, over the last year. Year on year growth of 124% is certainly a sight to behold.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Alpa Laboratories maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 24% to ₹1.1b. That's a real positive.

Alpa Laboratories isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹1.4b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Alpa Laboratories Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Alpa Laboratories insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 61% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. Of course, Alpa Laboratories is a very small company, with a market cap of only ₹1.4b. So despite a large proportional holding, insiders only have ₹885m worth of stock. That's not a huge stake in absolute terms, but it should help keep insiders aligned with other shareholders.

Does Alpa Laboratories Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Alpa Laboratories's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Alpa Laboratories for a spot on your watchlist. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Alpa Laboratories you should be aware of.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
