Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that UFO Moviez India Limited (NSE:UFO) does use debt in its business. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is UFO Moviez India's Debt?
As you can see below, UFO Moviez India had ₹1.11b of debt at September 2022, down from ₹1.16b a year prior. On the flip side, it has ₹1.01b in cash leading to net debt of about ₹95.8m.
A Look At UFO Moviez India's Liabilities
According to the last reported balance sheet, UFO Moviez India had liabilities of ₹1.56b due within 12 months, and liabilities of ₹1.23b due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of ₹1.01b as well as receivables valued at ₹548.4m due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling ₹1.23b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
This deficit isn't so bad because UFO Moviez India is worth ₹2.29b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is UFO Moviez India's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So when considering debt, it's definitely worth looking at the earnings trend. Over 12 months, UFO Moviez India reported revenue of ₹3.6b, which is a gain of 164%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. So there's no doubt that shareholders are cheering for growth
Caveat Emptor
While we can certainly appreciate UFO Moviez India's revenue growth, its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is not ideal. Indeed, it lost a very considerable ₹358m at the EBIT level. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through ₹169m of cash over the last year. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. For example UFO Moviez India has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
