Even With A 27% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Shemaroo Entertainment Limited's (NSE:SHEMAROO) Performance Completely
The Shemaroo Entertainment Limited (NSE:SHEMAROO) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 27%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 35% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Shemaroo Entertainment may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Entertainment industry in India have P/S ratios greater than 6.1x and even P/S higher than 26x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Shemaroo Entertainment's Recent Performance Look Like?
Revenue has risen firmly for Shemaroo Entertainment recently, which is pleasing to see. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Shemaroo Entertainment's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Shemaroo Entertainment's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 15% gain to the company's top line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 136% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 18% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Shemaroo Entertainment's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Shares in Shemaroo Entertainment have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Shemaroo Entertainment revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.
