Just Dial Limited's (NSE:JUSTDIAL) Financials Are Too Obscure To Link With Current Share Price Momentum: What's In Store For the Stock?
Just Dial's (NSE:JUSTDIAL) stock is up by a considerable 30% over the past month. However, we decided to pay attention to the company's fundamentals which don't appear to give a clear sign about the company's financial health. Specifically, we decided to study Just Dial's ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.

How Is ROE Calculated?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Just Dial is:
10% = ₹4.2b ÷ ₹40b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. That means that for every ₹1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated ₹0.10 in profit.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Just Dial's Earnings Growth And 10% ROE
On the face of it, Just Dial's ROE is not much to talk about. However, its ROE is similar to the industry average of 11%, so we won't completely dismiss the company. Having said that, Just Dial has shown a meagre net income growth of 4.5% over the past five years. Remember, the company's ROE is not particularly great to begin with. So this could also be one of the reasons behind the company's low growth in earnings.
As a next step, we compared Just Dial's net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 8.7% in the same period.
Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Just Dial is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is Just Dial Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?
Just Dial doesn't pay any regular dividends currently which essentially means that it has been reinvesting all of its profits into the business. However, there's only been very little earnings growth to show for it. So there could be some other explanation in that regard. For instance, the company's business may be deteriorating.
Conclusion
In total, we're a bit ambivalent about Just Dial's performance. While the company does have a high rate of profit retention, its low rate of return is probably hampering its earnings growth. That being so, the latest analyst forecasts show that the company will continue to see an expansion in its earnings.
