Affle 3i Limited (NSE:AFFLE) Looks Just Right With A 28% Price Jump

Affle 3i Limited (NSE:AFFLE) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 28% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 54% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, Affle 3i's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 71.3x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 29x and even P/E's below 16x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Affle 3i certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For Affle 3i?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Affle 3i would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 24% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 69% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 26% each year as estimated by the eleven analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 22% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Affle 3i is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

Shares in Affle 3i have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Affle 3i's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
