Returns On Capital At Visaka Industries (NSE:VISAKAIND) Paint A Concerning Picture
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Although, when we looked at Visaka Industries (NSE:VISAKAIND), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Visaka Industries is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.13 = ₹1.2b ÷ (₹12b - ₹2.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).
So, Visaka Industries has an ROCE of 13%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 9.3% generated by the Basic Materials industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Visaka Industries Tell Us?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Visaka Industries, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 23% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
In Conclusion...
