Ramco Industries Limited (NSE:RAMCOIND) Shares Fly 25% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
The Ramco Industries Limited (NSE:RAMCOIND) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 25%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 41% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, Ramco Industries' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23.9x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 34x and even P/E's above 63x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Ramco Industries has been doing a decent job lately as it's been growing earnings at a reasonable pace. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Ramco Industries' to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 4.4% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, lamentably EPS has fallen 65% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 26% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we are not surprised that Ramco Industries is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
The Bottom Line On Ramco Industries' P/E
Despite Ramco Industries' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Ramco Industries maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Ramco Industries (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
