Not Many Are Piling Into Nelcast Limited (NSE:NELCAST) Stock Yet As It Plummets 26%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Nelcast Limited (NSE:NELCAST) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 35% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Nelcast's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 24.5x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in India, where the median P/E ratio is around 25x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.
For instance, Nelcast's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Does Growth Match The P/E?
Nelcast's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 46%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 106% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 25% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's curious that Nelcast's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Key Takeaway
Nelcast's plummeting stock price has brought its P/E right back to the rest of the market. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Nelcast currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
