For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Nahar Poly Films (NSE:NAHARPOLY), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Nahar Poly Films Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Nahar Poly Films has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, Nahar Poly Films's EPS soared from ₹22.01 to ₹33.26, in just one year. That's a impressive gain of 51%.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While we note Nahar Poly Films's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 46% to ₹4.0b. That's a real positive.

Since Nahar Poly Films is no giant, with a market capitalization of ₹12b, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Nahar Poly Films Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

As a general rule, I think it worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Nahar Poly Films with market caps between ₹7.6b and ₹30b is about ₹15m.

The Nahar Poly Films CEO received total compensation of just ₹5.2m in the year to . That looks like modest pay to me, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Is Nahar Poly Films Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Nahar Poly Films's strong EPS growth. The fast growth bodes well while the very reasonable CEO pay assists builds some confidence in the board. So I'd venture it may well deserve a spot on your watchlist, or even a little further research. Don't forget that there may still be risks.
