Should You Be Adding Kirloskar Industries (NSE:KIRLOSIND) To Your Watchlist Today?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Kirloskar Industries (NSE:KIRLOSIND). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Kirloskar Industries Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Kirloskar Industries has grown EPS by 51% per year, over the last three years. Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). I note that, last year, Kirloskar Industries's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Kirloskar Industries maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 97% to ₹35b. That's a real positive.

Since Kirloskar Industries is no giant, with a market capitalization of ₹13b, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Kirloskar Industries Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Kirloskar Industries insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. Indeed, with a collective holding of 75%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. In terms of absolute value, insiders have ₹9.9b invested in the business, using the current share price. That's nothing to sneeze at!

Should You Add Kirloskar Industries To Your Watchlist?

Kirloskar Industries's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Kirloskar Industries for a spot on your watchlist. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Kirloskar Industries you should know about.

Although Kirloskar Industries certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
