These Metrics Don't Make GOCL (NSE:GOCLCORP) Look Too Strong
What underlying fundamental trends can indicate that a company might be in decline? More often than not, we'll see a declining return on capital employed (ROCE) and a declining amount of capital employed. Ultimately this means that the company is earning less per dollar invested and on top of that, it's shrinking its base of capital employed. On that note, looking into GOCL (NSE:GOCLCORP), we weren't too upbeat about how things were going.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for GOCL, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.0008 = ₹18m ÷ (₹24b - ₹1.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
So, GOCL has an ROCE of 0.08%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Chemicals industry average of 14%.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
There is reason to be cautious about GOCL, given the returns are trending downwards. About five years ago, returns on capital were 1.3%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. Meanwhile, capital employed in the business has stayed roughly the flat over the period. Companies that exhibit these attributes tend to not be shrinking, but they can be mature and facing pressure on their margins from competition. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect GOCL to turn into a multi-bagger.
In Conclusion...
In the end, the trend of lower returns on the same amount of capital isn't typically an indication that we're looking at a growth stock. But investors must be expecting an improvement of sorts because over the last five yearsthe stock has delivered a respectable 74% return. In any case, the current underlying trends don't bode well for long term performance so unless they reverse, we'd start looking elsewhere.
