The Deccan Cements (NSE:DECCANCE) Share Price Has Gained 43% And Shareholders Are Hoping For More
If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. Better yet, you'd like to see the share price move up more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Deccan Cements Limited (NSE:DECCANCE) share price is up 43% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Some buyers are laughing, though, with an increase of 23% in the last year.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over half a decade, Deccan Cements managed to grow its earnings per share at 4.7% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 7% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Deccan Cements the TSR over the last 5 years was 50%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Deccan Cements' TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 25%. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 8% per year. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
