Century Extrusions Limited (NSE:CENTEXT) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 32% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last month tops off a massive increase of 135% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 34x, you may still consider Century Extrusions as an attractive investment with its 25.2x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

The earnings growth achieved at Century Extrusions over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Century Extrusions?

Century Extrusions' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 25% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 242% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 25% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

With this information, we find it odd that Century Extrusions is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Century Extrusions' P/E

Despite Century Extrusions' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Century Extrusions revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Century Extrusions (1 is concerning) you should be aware of.
