If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out APL Apollo Tubes (NSE:APLAPOLLO) Before It's Too Late
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like APL Apollo Tubes (NSE:APLAPOLLO), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Quickly Is APL Apollo Tubes Increasing Earnings Per Share?
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Impressively, APL Apollo Tubes has grown EPS by 19% per year, compound, in the last three years. This has no doubt fuelled the optimism that sees the stock trading on a high multiple of earnings.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. It seems APL Apollo Tubes is pretty stable, since revenue and EBIT margins are pretty flat year on year. That's not a major concern but nor does it point to the long term growth we like to see.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for APL Apollo Tubes.
Are APL Apollo Tubes Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
We do note that, in the last year, insiders sold -₹356m worth of shares. But that's far less than the ₹750m insiders spend purchasing stock. I find this encouraging because it suggests they are optimistic about the APL Apollo Tubes's future. It is also worth noting that it was Rahul Gupta who made the biggest single purchase, worth ₹714m, paying ₹475 per share.
The good news, alongside the insider buying, for APL Apollo Tubes bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth ₹12b. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.
Should You Add APL Apollo Tubes To Your Watchlist?
You can't deny that APL Apollo Tubes has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Not only that, but we can see that insiders both own a lot of, and are buying more, shares in the company. So I do think this is one stock worth watching. It's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
