Market Cool On AMD Industries Limited's (NSE:AMDIND) Revenues Pushing Shares 25% Lower

The AMD Industries Limited (NSE:AMDIND) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 29% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think AMD Industries' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S in India's Packaging industry is similar at about 0.8x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does AMD Industries' Recent Performance Look Like?

For example, consider that AMD Industries' financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

How Is AMD Industries' Revenue Growth Trending?

AMD Industries' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 15% decrease to the company's top line. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 56% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 14%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

With this information, we find it interesting that AMD Industries is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From AMD Industries' P/S?

Following AMD Industries' share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We didn't quite envision AMD Industries' P/S sitting in line with the wider industry, considering the revenue growth over the last three-year is higher than the current industry outlook. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
