Akzo Nobel India Limited (NSE:AKZOINDIA) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 2nd of September to ₹40.00. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.7%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Akzo Nobel India's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. The last dividend made up a very large portion of earnings and also represented 78% of free cash flows. This is usually an indication that the focus of the company is returning cash to shareholders rather than reinvesting it for growth.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 60.8%. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 63% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was ₹20.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ₹65.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 13% over that duration. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.

Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Akzo Nobel India has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 11% per annum. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.

Our Thoughts On Akzo Nobel India's Dividend

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Akzo Nobel India's payments are rock solid. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Akzo Nobel India that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
