Dabur India Limited's (NSE:DABUR) Has Had A Decent Run On The Stock market: Are Fundamentals In The Driver's Seat?
Most readers would already know that Dabur India's (NSE:DABUR) stock increased by 8.4% over the past three months. As most would know, long-term fundamentals have a strong correlation with market price movements, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. In this article, we decided to focus on Dabur India's ROE.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.
How Is ROE Calculated?
The formula for return on equity is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Dabur India is:
16% = ₹18b ÷ ₹112b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).
The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. That means that for every ₹1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated ₹0.16 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.
Dabur India's Earnings Growth And 16% ROE
To start with, Dabur India's ROE looks acceptable. Further, the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 14%. Dabur India's decent returns aren't reflected in Dabur India'smediocre five year net income growth average of 2.6%. We reckon that a low growth, when returns are moderate could be the result of certain circumstances like low earnings retention or poor allocation of capital.
Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Dabur India's reported growth was lower than the industry growth of 11% over the last few years, which is not something we like to see.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. Is Dabur India Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
With a high three-year median payout ratio of 54% (or a retention ratio of 46%), most of Dabur India's profits are being paid to shareholders. This definitely contributes to the low earnings growth seen by the company.
Additionally, Dabur India has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years, which means that the company's management is determined to pay dividends even if it means little to no earnings growth. Based on the latest analysts' estimates, we found that the company's future payout ratio over the next three years is expected to hold steady at 54%. However, Dabur India's ROE is predicted to rise to 19% despite there being no anticipated change in its payout ratio.
Conclusion
In total, it does look like Dabur India has some positive aspects to its business. However, while the company does have a high ROE, its earnings growth number is quite disappointing. This can be blamed on the fact that it reinvests only a small portion of its profits and pays out the rest as dividends. Having said that, looking at the current analyst estimates, we found that the company's earnings are expected to gain momentum.
