Has KN Agri Resources Limited's (NSE:KNAGRI) Impressive Stock Performance Got Anything to Do With Its Fundamentals?

Simply Wall St

KN Agri Resources' (NSE:KNAGRI) stock is up by a considerable 11% over the past three months. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. In this article, we decided to focus on KN Agri Resources' ROE.

Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for KN Agri Resources is:

10% = ₹369m ÷ ₹3.5b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each ₹1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made ₹0.10 in profit.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

A Side By Side comparison of KN Agri Resources' Earnings Growth And 10% ROE

When you first look at it, KN Agri Resources' ROE doesn't look that attractive. However, its ROE is similar to the industry average of 9.3%, so we won't completely dismiss the company. Having said that, KN Agri Resources has shown a modest net income growth of 5.5% over the past five years. Given the slightly low ROE, it is likely that there could be some other aspects that are driving this growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.

As a next step, we compared KN Agri Resources' net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 17% in the same period.

NSEI:KNAGRI Past Earnings Growth July 15th 2025

The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if KN Agri Resources is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.

Is KN Agri Resources Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?

Given that KN Agri Resources doesn't pay any regular dividends to its shareholders, we infer that the company has been reinvesting all of its profits to grow its business.

Summary

In total, it does look like KN Agri Resources has some positive aspects to its business. Specifically, its fairly high earnings growth number, which no doubt was backed by the company's high earnings retention. Still, the low ROE means that all that reinvestment is not reaping a lot of benefit to the investors. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company.
