With EPS Growth And More, Hatsun Agro Product (NSE:HATSUN) Is Interesting
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Hatsun Agro Product (NSE:HATSUN). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Hatsun Agro Product's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Hatsun Agro Product's EPS has grown 36% each year, compound, over three years. This has no doubt fuelled the optimism that sees the stock trading on a high multiple of earnings.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Hatsun Agro Product shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 5.2% to 7.9%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Hatsun Agro Product Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
Although we did see some insider selling (worth -₹38m) this was overshadowed by a mountain of buying, totalling ₹634m in just one year. I find this encouraging because it suggests they are optimistic about the Hatsun Agro Product's future. We also note that it was the MD & Executive Director, C. Sathyan, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying ₹516m for shares at about ₹619 each.
On top of the insider buying, we can also see that Hatsun Agro Product insiders own a large chunk of the company. Indeed, with a collective holding of 79%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. And their holding is extremely valuable at the current share price, totalling ₹156b. Now that's what I call some serious skin in the game!
While insiders are apparently happy to hold and accumulate shares, that is just part of the pretty picture. The cherry on top is that the CEO, C. Sathyan is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Hatsun Agro Product with market caps between ₹149b and ₹476b is about ₹47m.
The CEO of Hatsun Agro Product only received ₹8.0m in total compensation for the year ending . That's clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Should You Add Hatsun Agro Product To Your Watchlist?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Hatsun Agro Product's strong EPS growth. On top of that, insiders own a significant stake in the company and have been buying more shares. So it's fair to say I think this stock may well deserve a spot on your watchlist.
