Share India Securities Limited's (NSE:SHAREINDIA) Share Price Boosted 39% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Share India Securities Limited (NSE:SHAREINDIA) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 39% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 37% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, Share India Securities may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 14.2x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios greater than 28x and even P/E's higher than 54x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Share India Securities over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Share India Securities?
Share India Securities' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 43% decrease to the company's bottom line. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in EPS being achieved in total. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 25% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that Share India Securities is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From Share India Securities' P/E?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Share India Securities' P/E close to the market median. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Share India Securities maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
