Are Insiders Selling Piramal Enterprises Limited (NSE:PEL) Stock?
It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Piramal Enterprises Limited (NSE:PEL).
What Is Insider Buying?
Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Piramal Enterprises
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, P. Kuttikrishnan, sold ₹4.8m worth of shares at a price of ₹1,601 per share. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of ₹1,567. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Piramal Enterprises Insiders Are Selling The Stock
We have seen a bit of insider selling at Piramal Enterprises, over the last three months. President & CFO Vivek Valsaraj sold just ₹949k worth of shares in that time. It's not great to see insider selling, nor the lack of recent buyers. But the volume sold is so low that it really doesn't bother us.
Insider Ownership of Piramal Enterprises
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 0.7% of Piramal Enterprises shares, worth about ₹2.3b. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Piramal Enterprises Tell Us?
An insider sold Piramal Enterprises shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Zooming out, the longer term picture doesn't give us much comfort. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
