Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Aditya Birla Money Limited's (NSE:BIRLAMONEY) Earnings Despite 26% Price Jump
Aditya Birla Money Limited (NSE:BIRLAMONEY) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 97% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Aditya Birla Money's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.7x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 35x and even P/E's above 65x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Aditya Birla Money certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Aditya Birla Money's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 99% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 273% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 26% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it odd that Aditya Birla Money is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price move, Aditya Birla Money's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Aditya Birla Money revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
