There's No Escaping Arihant Capital Markets Limited's (NSE:ARIHANTCAP) Muted Earnings Despite A 26% Share Price Rise
Arihant Capital Markets Limited (NSE:ARIHANTCAP) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. Looking further back, the 20% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Even after such a large jump in price, Arihant Capital Markets may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.5x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios greater than 30x and even P/E's higher than 57x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For instance, Arihant Capital Markets' receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Arihant Capital Markets?
Arihant Capital Markets' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 17%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year EPS growth is still a noteworthy 17% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 23% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that Arihant Capital Markets' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Bottom Line On Arihant Capital Markets' P/E
Despite Arihant Capital Markets' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Arihant Capital Markets revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
