There's No Escaping Angel One Limited's (NSE:ANGELONE) Muted Earnings Despite A 29% Share Price Rise

Angel One Limited (NSE:ANGELONE) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 29% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 53%.

Even after such a large jump in price, Angel One's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.3x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 33x and even P/E's above 62x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Recent times have been advantageous for Angel One as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Angel One?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Angel One's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 26%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 184% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 11% each year over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 20% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

With this information, we can see why Angel One is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Angel One's P/E close to the market median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Angel One maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
