Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. As with many other companies Chalet Hotels Limited (NSE:CHALET) makes use of debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. As you can see below, Chalet Hotels had ₹20.2b of debt at September 2024, down from ₹29.2b a year prior. However, it also had ₹983.8m in cash, and so its net debt is ₹19.2b.
How Strong Is Chalet Hotels' Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Chalet Hotels had liabilities of ₹17.9b due within 12 months, and liabilities of ₹14.4b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of ₹983.8m and ₹703.9m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total ₹30.6b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
Since publicly traded Chalet Hotels shares are worth a total of ₹221.6b, it seems unlikely that this level of liabilities would be a major threat. However, we do think it is worth keeping an eye on its balance sheet strength, as it may change over time.

Our View
Chalet Hotels's EBIT growth rate suggests it can handle its debt as easily as Cristiano Ronaldo could score a goal against an under 14's goalkeeper. But truth be told we feel its interest cover does undermine this impression a bit. All these things considered, it appears that Chalet Hotels can comfortably handle its current debt levels. On the plus side, this leverage can boost shareholder returns, but the potential downside is more risk of loss, so it's worth monitoring the balance sheet.
